Magnetic Health Therapy & TMJ Pain
Definition:
Temporomandibular joint pain (TMJ pain) involves the joint that connects your jaw to your skull. It is located in front of your ears. This joint allows you to talk, chew and yawn. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, it is estimated that over 10 million people in the United States experience pain associated with TMJ disorders. Also, women are more likely than men to develop TMJ disorders.
The pain associated with TMJ disorders can often be relieved with self-care or nonsurgical treatments. In a severe case, TMJ pain may need dental or surgical procedures to relieve the pain and discomfort.
Symptoms:
1. Pain or tenderness of the jaw
2. Aching pain in and around your ear
3. Difficulty with chewing or discomfort while chewing
4. Facial pain/achiness
5. Locking of the jaw, making it difficult to open or close your mouth
6. Headaches
7. An uneven bite, due to one or more teeth making premature contact
8. Limited movement of the jaw
9. Pain with clicking sound or grating sensation upon opening mouth
Causes:
The temporomandibular joint is one of the most complex joints in your body. Here is a list of possible causes for TMJ pain:
1. The disk, which cushions the TMJ, may be misaligned or eroded
2. The joint's cartilage is damaged by arthritis
3. The joint is damaged by a trauma or injury
4. The muscles that stabilize the joint are overworked (habitual grinding of the teeth)
5. In many cases the cause of TMJ symptoms is not clear
Risk Factors:
1. More common in women between the ages of 30 and 50.
2. Jaw clenching
3. Bruxism (teeth grinding)
4. Rheumatoid arthritis
