Magnetic Health Therapy & Tennis Elbow
Definition:
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is considered an overuse injury that affects your elbow. Generally, playing tennis is one just one cause of tennis elbow pain. In fact, there are many other activities that can cause tennis elbow. The area of pain occurs primarily where the tendons of your forearm muscles attach to the bony aspects on the outside of your elbow (lateral epicondyle). Additionally, pain can also spread into your forearm and wrist.
Symptoms:
1. Pain that radiates from the outside of your elbow into your forearm and wrist
2. Pain when you extend your wrist
3. Weakness in your forearm
4. Pain that gets worse over weeks or months
5. Pain when using hands to grip, shake hands or turning doorknob
6. Inability to hold certain objects, such as a cup of water
Causes:
Tennis elbow is an overuse injury caused by repeated contraction of the forearm muscles that you use to flex and extend the wrist. Repetitive motion to the area may result in inflammation or a series of tiny tears in the tendons that connects muscle of the forearm to the outside aspect of your elbow. Playing tennis is one possible cause of the condition. Many other common arm motions can also cause tennis elbow, such as painting and knitting.
Risk Factors:
Tennis elbow can affect anyone who repetitively stresses the wrists and forearm. Anyone who uses repetitive movements for at least two hours a day is at greater risk.
Complications:
Left untreated, tennis elbow can result in chronic pain — especially when lifting or gripping objects. Using your arm and wrist too strenuously before your elbow has healed can make the problem worse.
