Definition:
Migraines are headaches that are chronic in nature. It can cause significant pain for hours or even days. The symptoms can be so severe that many people who experience migraines seek a dark, quiet room to lie down. Migraines may be preceded or accompanied by flashes of light, blind spots or a tingling sensation in your arm or leg. A migraine can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. In addition, migraines can cause a person to be extremely sensitivity to light and sound.
Causes:
Although the cause of migraines isn't fully understood, it appears that genetics and environmental factors seem to both play a factor. Furthermore, here is a list of factors that can trigger a migraine:
1. Hormonal changes in women: Changes in estrogen levels seem to trigger headaches in women with a history of migraines. A major drop in estrogen levels occur the moment immediately before or during a woman's period. Women who have had a past history of migraines report headaches during these periods. Other factors that trigger migraines include pregnancy or menopause. Oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy may exacerbate migraines. However, some women find it's beneficial to take them.
2. Foods: Some migraines appear to be triggered by certain foods such as alcohol (beer and red wine); aged cheeses; monosodium glutamate (MSG), chocolate; aspartame; overuse of caffeine; salty foods and processed foods.
3. Stress: Migraines can be a result of stress at work or home.
4. Sensory stimuli: Bright lights, sun glare, loud sounds and certain odors can trigger migraines.
5. Changes in wake-sleep pattern: Too much sleep or not enough sleep may cause migraines.
6. Physical factors: Intense physical exertion may trigger migraines.
7. Changes in the environment: Changes of weather or barometric pressure can cause migraines.
8. Medications: Certain medications can trigger migraines.
Risk Factors:
1. Family history: Often times, people with migraines have a family history of migraine. If one or both of your parents have migraines, there's a good chance you will too.
2. Age: Migraines are most common in people who are between 30 and 39 years old. While half the people who suffer from migraines experience them before the age of 20.
3. Gender: Women are three times as likely to have migraines as men are.
