Initially, Dr. Vallbona and his colleague, Carlton Hazelwood, Ph.D., used magnets for the pain in their own knee. To his surprise, within minutes the pain was gone as he remarked “That was too good to be true.” His personal experience with magnets led him to consider using magnetic therapy on a larger scale involving patients diagnosed with post-polio syndrome. Generally, patients recovering from this condition experience chronic muscle pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, muscle cramps and joint pain.

One of Dr. Vallbona’s first patients to be treated with pain relief magnets happened to be a priest with post-polio syndrome. The priest had difficulty raising his left hand especially when gesturing while giving a sermon to his congregation. Dr. Vallbona realized this was a great opportunity to scientifically test the effects of magnetic health therapy on chronic pain in the body. In addition, he knew the implications this study would have on the millions of people living with pain. The data from this study would be a valuable resource for people experiencing pain. This would allow them to make an informed decision on improving their health with magnets. Another significant factor was if this study showed magnetic health therapy to be safe and effective, it would have advantages over the side effects of prescription medication and drugs. 

Coming from a medical background, Dr. Vallbona knew that other medical colleagues had reservations about magnetic therapy. It was because of this belief that he sought out to perform a thorough investigation involving pain relief magnets that would yield scientific evidence to evaluate the effects of magnetic health therapy on chronic pain.

This research study was conducted at Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation Research. The patients were placed into one of two groups. Only one group received therapeutic magnets while the other group received a sham device. Neither the patients nor the doctors knew what therapy was used on which patient. In all, 50 participants were evaluated. The magnets used in the study ranged between 300 to 500 gauss.

Before the magnets were placed on the area of pain, the participants were asked to grade their level of pain on a scale from 0 to 10, zero being no pain and ten meaning excruciating pain. They would also rate their pain at the completion of this clinical trial. The magnets and sham devices were then placed on the area of pain for 45 minutes.

When the study concluded, the participants who received therapy magnets reported a reduction in pain from 9.6 down to 4.4. In comparison, the patients who received the sham device reported a reduction in pain from 9.5 to 8.4. 

The results of this clinical trial supported the claims made by those who have used magnetic health therapy. This study has also opened the eyes of other medical professionals to the benefits of pain relief magnets.
